NON-CONFORMITY

Fri Jul 10, 2009, 1:31 PM
(Speech I had to right about non-conformity everyone loved it so I decided to post it.COMMENT PLEASE!)

Being you

To be your own individual self should be easy .It should be as simple as breathing. Something that comes naturally. Something that you don’t have to think a bout doing. You shouldn’t have to go on some kind of weird soul searching adventure just to figure out “who you are” and where you are going in life. Unfortunately, it’s insanely easy to lose yourself. You can lose yourself by just living. To be honest, I think about 80% of the population has lost themselves. It’s understandable. We get up, eat, go to school, eat, after school activities, eat, go to bed. And repeat until about adulthood. Get up, eat, go to work, eat, pay bills, eat go to bed. Add a little bit of TV watching in there, and that’s our life. Our whole lives are based through repetition (which is the quickest way to brain wash someone). We’re told our whole lives what is right and what is wrong, what we should and shouldn’t do. It seems almost like part of nature for us to look for approval. For example, lets say a kid decides to eat with his mouth open for awhile, and then his mother tells him that it’s rude and not to do it. Eventually more than likely the kid is going to learn fast that he shouldn’t eat with his mouth open. Another example, children will try to get some kind of reaction from their guardian (simply by showing off, or starting to cry after a little fall even though they it may not hurt so much) based on the guardians reaction, the kid is going to learn from that. As children we learn from our surroundings and absorb things like a sponge. After we’ve been told things so many times, it sinks in and becomes a part of us.( why do you think its so easy for children to learn more than one language). So, I sometimes question how much of me is really ‘me’, and how much of me is the rest of society.

Since we learned to look for approval (whether he consciously realize it or not) it’s very easy to get sucked up into the “conformity tornado” as I like to call it. You get sucked into it, hoping not to die, and it destroys everything in its path. But at the end of the day those possessions you might have lost doesn’t matter. Your life is what matters. So if you decide to be a conformist and take a job you hate in order to get a lot of money, expensive fake tans, beautiful women, or whatever you like to daydream about. In the end, none of that is going to matter. For get all of that, if you have a job that you want that really want and love, go for it! As long as you can support yourself with that job. If you want to be a manager at Pizza hut your whole life. Fine. As long as your heart is into it, and you’re happy with it, then you are being successful with your life. I can guarantee you’ll be more happy with your life, than someone who just got a certain job they hate to make a lot of money . No wonder why a lot of Americans are on anti depressants. Imagine waking up and going to a job you hate everyday. That’s like going to school everyday, and every time you get a bad grade or skip, you have a risk of getting fired or losing money. Think about it hard. Sucks right? That’s what happens when you give up your dreams for a job that promises a lot of money when you hit about 45. And that’s IF you do it right, and kiss enough butt on the way there.

Why do we do this to ourselves? Because that’s what we have been taught to do. We have been brain washed to be controlled like trained dogs. Does that sound crazy? I remember being in grade school and all of us kids would feel special and important when teachers gave us stickers and candy for behaving a certain way that they wanted us to. Pizza parties, special treatment, you name it. I remember being part of it. If a kid got bad grades all the time, it was frowned upon and he wouldn’t get whatever it was promised. And the kid was labeled as “dumb”. It doesn’t really change when you get into high school (or the “real world” for that matter). And we are told if we don’t make grades a certain way, our jobs aren’t going to be “successful” etc. I promise you a kid with straight A’s doesn’t necessarily make him smarter than the kid with straight B’s, or even the kid with D’s or Fs. I know a lot of dumb “smart” people. But somehow a handful of these “smart” people end up being our bosses. And viewed as almost superior to others, that doesn’t mean that their life is much better than yours. But the economy changes. People today that have gone to school for years, are losing their jobs and going into debt. And this whole time we thought that these people were lucky. You might as well choose the job YOU want, write essays like YOU want, learn the way YOU want, etc. But hey, don’t listen to me. Do what YOU want. It’s you’re life. I’m only a small part of it.
Try to stop and think.Tune out that radio, ipod, TV, tune out your parents, friends, tune out the government (please! At least them anyway) and listen to you. It might be hard in the beginning because you’re so used to tuning yourself out. So it might take awhile, but when you feel as if you should do something, and no one elses opinions are going through your head and effecting your decision. Than that’s what’s natural. One way that separates me from a number of people my age is TV. I rarely watch it much anymore. If you were to ask me about the latest new awesome show, more than likely I would just look at you like you had a big white feather sticking out of the side of your head. I refuse to let a box with moving pictures control my thinking patterns and processes. If I want to know some info, I would look it up myself if I know nothing on the subject. Its funny how majority of Americans talk about how much they hate and don’t trust the government, and yet they turn on the news everyday to get “information”. And if you think you ARE getting good info because there are so many different channels, well… all of our T.V channels are owned by only 6 media corporations, meaning if you were to watch all of that info from TV to form a an opinion, you are only getting and idea from 6 different point of views, but if you want to be more specific. One idea. Since our media is controlled my one group of people. The government. But if you decide that TV is best for you. Go for it. It’s your life, as long as you make your own decisions. You should be proud.
